#13 (again)

Fireball's most famous #22 was the black and gold job that won the '500 in '62, fielded of course by Smokey Yunick, at that time with Pontiac backing.

https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&...7mSiTeahc2CZM:

While we are at it, Smokey's Chevelle also deserves mention.

Paul Goldsmith drove a bunch of Smokey's #13 cars, but Curtis Turner famously drove the Chevelle(s). Both excellent drivers.

We all are aware of Jeff Gordon and his #24 but how about Cecil Gordon with the same number #24. Also would be remiss if I didn't mention the Racin Grandmother.....Granny Tatro and her #24 NSS Late Model.

Larry Detjens

A body shop owner by trade, always had great looking cars.
Built and raced Dodge Challengers back in the day before Camaro's and tube frame cars took over.
Very nice guy, would come to Elko for the big shows and to the MN State Fair.
He passed away after a bad wreck at Kaukauna in 1981.

#19 Harry Pullen. Made Big Mean E look like a creampuff. He would cross an infield to ensure that what goes around comes around RIGHT NOW.

Had at least one brother that raced, Henry.

Been a part of MN and WI stock car racing for nearly 50 years and from what I've read will be back again next season.

#20 Bobby Dawson

In the mid to late '60s Bobby ran a sharp '30s Chevy Sportman (with a six) that was later updated to a modified (with an 8) before the cutdown almost-sprint-car modifieds prevailed.

Bobby could run on the outside for 10 laps or more to get by a guy, smooth as silk, clean as the driven snow. Or so I recollect...

https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&...b-0welpJDpRLM:

Also long time racer Don Keithly is running #20 this year, actually roman numeral "XX" in honor of an old racer that he knows.

Don Keithly:

And a clean shaven Don in victory lane:

Joe Jacalone--Based out of St Augustine, Joe mostly races sports cars with his brother, Jerome, notably running the 24 hours of Daytona 2x with their own car. Joe has also raced short track cars locally over the years, is now mostly running vintage sports car events that are races, not parades.

Smooth, aggressive when necessary, surgical in his attack. Wins. A lot.

#31 Don'l Burkhalter (pronounced "Don...L"). A hard, hard racer. Someone Pullen respected, and vice versa. At least to the point of knowing, for sure, what would happen if they hit them "wrong".

Also ran a repair shop in downtown Orlando for years that specialized in...Renaults. A big hearted guy.

Shown here after someone took a little "convincing", no doubt.

Am not sure if #35 was "LeRoy Porter's Number", but the first time I remember watching him run was in a 55 Chevy, painted orange, with a six cylinder.

Of course, he is perhaps best remembered for driving the Lewis Green #7:

More pix please.

This was Dana Barlow's English Ford. It was a "A" class modified mini stock, shown here at Florida City Speedway.

#32 Dave McInnis

Sort of in the same category as the Reutimann's in my memory.

He was a Yunick-like innovator, and a fearless competitor. His cars always looked like tinfoil that had been wadded up about twice and straightened out once, but he routinely would come from the back for the win. Clean if possible, and up for anything if the other guy insisted.

In the late sixties he would pull his late model up to the back "fence" (actually a sawed off telphone pole) at Orlando Speedway, and then light the tires while crewmen rocked the car back and forth, presumably to soften the rubber. At the time, it sure intimidated everyone in the joint, if nothing else.
